State Changes: Plate 1, printed in black. Changes from state I, in drypoint: three additional rows of shorter arrows added behind existing rows; ripples delineated around two leftmost arrows and several arrows reinforced. Changes from state I, in engraving: several arrows reinforced.
Artist’s Remarks:
Inscribed on the verso of the source drawing: "il pleut sur la route comme il pleut dans mon coeur. Charles Baudelaire."
In fact, the poem referenced was authored by Paul Verlaine (1844–1896), not Charles Baudelaire.
