Background:
The edition of this composition was published as a benefit for the Archives of American Art, Washington DC.

The Archives of American Art (AAA) is a research center developed in 1954. It sponsors an annual exhibition, dinner, and awards event in New York, NY, which also serves as a fundraiser for the AAA. In 1998, the subject of the exhibition was critics, including items from Clement Greenberg, Katherine Kuh, and Bourgeois's husband Robert Goldwater, among others. Critic Robert Hughes was the honoré at that year's awards event, which is why he appears in this composition. Each year an artist makes a limited edition artwork to be given to the attendees. Past artists have included Ellsworth Kelly, Roy Lichtenstein, Frank Stella, Chuck Close, and Wayne Thiebaud, and others.
Other Remarks:
Printer Judith Solodkin of SOLO Impression gave the following information about techniques on the documentation sheet for this print:

View 1 - A computer compilation of two images of Robert Hughes from different periods of his life, one a still from a video and the second a photograph. The artist situated them together on a New York roof with an amalgam of a New York City skyline.

View 2 - A collage by Bourgeois of bookjackets and photographs of the critic Robert Hughes, overprinted with notations by the artist photographically transferred to aluminum plate.
