- Background:
- According to printer Felix Harlan of Harlan & Weaver, the floral motif in this composition was inspired by a very old piece of upholstery fabric that belonged to the artist.
The inscription on the verso of state I refers to Bourgeois's husband, Robert Goldwater, and her three sons, Michel, Jean-Louis, and Alain. - Artist’s Remarks:
- Inscription on the verso of state I: "father Robert. / Alain, Jean Louis, Michel." lower center sheet, pencil, artist's hand; "Sign en choeur. with [crossed out] using a tuning / fork / diapason tuning fork." bottom center to lower right, red ink, artist's hand.
