Biographical Note

Emilio Sanchez, a painter and printmaker, was born in Camagüey, Cuba in 1921. In 1944, he moved to New York City to study at the Art Students League and remained in the city until his death. His early works shifted between figuration and abstraction, with a particular interest in the play of light and shadow on forms. By the 1960s, his work became flatter and more geometrically abstract as he began exploring architectural themes, which would become dominant in his work through the 1970s and 1980s, and in the 1990s he became particularly focused on urban scenes of New York City. Sanchez died in Warwick, New York in 1999.
