Abstract: | Two drafts of Betty Chamberlain's unpublished manuscript, The History of MoMA. |
The History of MoMA was a book project envisioned by the Director of the Museum, René d'Harnoncourt, on the occasion of the Museum's 25th anniversary. It was never published.
Betty Chamberlain was Director of Publicity at The Museum of Modern Art from 1948 to 1953. Prior to her employment at the Museum, she worked on the editorial staffs of Time, Art News, The Magazine of Art, the Office of War Information (O.W.I.), and the United States Maritime Commission.
Two drafts of The History of MoMA, an unpublished manuscript by Betty Chamberlain written between 1953 and 1954, are contained in three 5" document boxes and one 2.5" document box. The drafts include typed and handwritten text, as well as annotations. The book was planned in four sections, with six chapters each. The format of each chapter is duplicated in each of the four sections, i.e., The People Involved, The Policies, Working Assets, Activities, Methods, and Public Response & Press Reaction. A Table of Contents precedes the manuscript.
The four sections are as follows:
Part I. The First Years - The Trial Period, 1929-1934
Part II. A Permanent Basis, 1934-1939
Part III. The War, May 1939-October 1945
Part IV. 1945-25th Anniversary, 1945-1954
The records are open for research and contain no restricted materials.
