Abstract: The administrative papers of Monroe Wheeler, former Director of Exhibitions and Publications at The Museum of Modern Art. Includes business communication, personal correspondence, post-retirement material and documents relating to Wheeler's work outside of the Museum.


This collection is organized into eight series created during processing of the material. The Monroe Wheeler papers came to the Museum Archives at various stages over a period of ten years in no discernable order. Alphabetical order was imposed on a folder level across the collection with the exception of the pre-existing chronological files. Changes in folder titles provide greater description of the folder contents, but efforts to preserve original folder titles have been made and at times the original folder title is indicated.

Biographical Note

Monroe Wheeler (1899-1988) was born in Evanston, Illinois. In the 1920s, before his long and active career at the Museum, Wheeler worked and lived in France, co-founding the publishing firm Harrison of Paris. Wheeler credits this period of his life as his introduction to the artist communities he would continue to associate with for the remainder of his career. This period also strengthened his skills and knowledge of producing and printing high-quality publications, which foreshadowed his long career as a publisher of fine books on art at the Museum. He began his work with the Museum in 1935 as a member of the Library Committee and director of Ignatz Wiemeler, Modern Bookbinder [MoMA Exh. #42b, September 30-October 24, 1935]. In 1938 he was appointed Director of Membership, and by 1939, he became the Director of Publications. In 1940, he became the first Director of Exhibitions. Wheeler was elected a Trustee of the Museum in 1944, and afterwards he became a member of the Executive Committee, the Exhibitions Program Committee, and the Coordination Committee. In 1948, Wheeler continued to run the Exhibitions and Publications department while overseeing the management of all of the Museum's operating outreach programs, including education, traveling (or circulating) exhibitions, and the library.

During the period between 1940-1967, Wheeler managed much of the logistics of the circulating exhibitions program and developed a strong publications program. Aside from his management of Museum programs, Wheeler is well known for directing museum exhibitions such as Modern Painters and Sculptors as Illustrators [MoMA Exh. #47, April 27-September 2, 1936] and Turner: Imagination and Reality [MoMA Exh. #794, March 23-June 19, 1966]. Under his direction the Museum produced over 300 books, both monographs and exhibition catalogues, which were distributed internationally, and in the process won acclaim for the high quality of visual art books with regard to scholarship, layout, design, and color reproductions. Wheeler authored many of the works published by the Museum, including monographs about Soutine and Rouault, which complimented museum exhibitions on the artists.

As a staff member of the Museum and as a trusted source of knowledge about art, Wheeler maintained a very visible profile within the greater national and international museum and art community. During World War II, he served as Chairman of the Committee on Publications for the Office of Inter-American Affairs under Nelson A. Rockefeller. In 1969, he accompanied NAR on an official U.S. appointed tour of Latin America as a Cultural Advisor. As a part of the International Program and under the auspices of the International Council, in 1965 Wheeler directed Cézanne to Miró [ICE-F-111].

Wheeler was appointed an Honorary Trustee of the Museum in 1965 and a Counsellor to the Trustees upon his retirement from the Museum in 1967. He continued to maintain ties to the Museum by working with the International Council and participating in a number of committees, including Prints and Illustrated Books, Photography, Drawings and Exhibitions. Affiliations outside of the Museum include serving as a Trustee and First Vice President of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, a Trustee of the Katherine Anne Porter Foundation, a Trustee of the Ben Shahn Foundation, a member of the Council of the Grolier Club, and President of the International Graphic Arts Society. He played an active role in the American Institute of Graphic Arts as well. Monroe Wheeler died in 1988 in New York City.

Scope and Content

The Monroe Wheeler Papers reflect the administrative work of Wheeler as Director of the Department of Publications and Exhibitions and a member of multiple internal Museum committees. The material ranges from 1938 to 1987, though the bulk of the collection dates from the early 1940s to the early 1960s. The material represents the daily business operations conducted by Wheeler, including organizing traveling exhibitions, producing and distributing publications, managing rights and reproductions of works of art, and keeping business contacts with local collectors, artists, gallery owners, and national and international cultural organizations. Correspondents include museum staff, artists, curators and directors of museums and cultural institutions, publishers, graphic designers, business leaders, private collectors, and the general public. A significant portion of the material also reflects Wheeler's management of the Museum's educational and cultural programming and his participation on many Museum committees while serving as Director of Program Departments.

Series I. General Correspondence

This series contains material pertaining to a specific subject matter regarding both internal and external Museum business. The bulk of the correspondents include Museum staff, but other correspondents include artists, gallery owners, graphic designers, and heads of museums and cultural institutions. The type of material that can be found in this series include letters, memos, reports, schedules, ledger sheets, lists, clippings, pamphlets or brochures. Some files have a generous amount of material with a wide date range representing an ongoing discussion or business relationship, while others contain a single letter with an outgoing reply.

Series II. Exhibition and Publication Correspondence

Series II contains material grouped by a single exhibition or a single publication. The files maintain their original (or close to original) title and contain information regarding the organization of the exhibition or the production of the publication. Also included in this series are proposed exhibitions and unpublished books. All exhibitions have been cross-referenced by their MoMA exhibition number and all published books include the date of publication and the author. In following with the original order of the material, all catalogue publications are listed separately from their corresponding exhibition, unless otherwise noted.

Series III. Rights and Reproductions Correspondence

The material in this series pertains to the reproduction of specific works of art for MoMA publications and for permissions to reproduce works of art outside of the Museum. Correspondents include reproduction companies, gallery owners, art dealers, private collectors, professors, publishing houses, publishers of journals, teachers and scholars. Some files contain a generous amount of information while others contain a single letter. The strength of this series is the correspondence regarding color reproduction and publication.

Series IV. Correspondence Files A-Z

Series IV has been reunited to form a complete alphabetical run. The files contain correspondence with affiliates outside of the Museum, including art collectors and dealers, art institutes, artists, universities, professors, museums and other business contacts. Internal correspondence rarely appears. Original letters, both handwritten and typed, often accompany the reply. The material within each folder has been filed by last name of the correspondent or by subject matter.

Series V. Chronological Files 1960-1966

This series contains carbon copies of all outgoing letters written or dictated by Wheeler or a former secretary, Frances Keech. The correspondence reflects business communication with insurance companies, art collectors and dealers, art institutes, artists, and other business contacts outside of the museum. The files are arranged chronologically by year.

Series VI. Committee Minutes, Binders and Budget Reports.

This series represents Wheeler's managerial work as Director of Program Departments at the Museum. The material in this series includes a Program Committee binder, budget reports, and minutes of the Staff Program Committee.

Series VII. Outside Affiliations and Post-Retirement

Series VII contains correspondence and other material resulting from Wheeler's affiliations outside of the Museum. This includes some material from his work as co-founder of the publisher Harrison of Paris Press, his work under Nelson A. Rockefeller in the U.S. Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs, and the 1969 Presidential Mission to Latin America with Nelson A. Rockefeller on which he served as a Cultural Advisor. This series also contains material pertaining to his work post-retirement as a Counselor to the Trustees.

Series VIII. Non-Manuscript Material

This series contains two manuscript boxes of invitations to MoMA and non-MoMA openings and events, research materials gathered by Wheeler for the exhibition Turner: Imagination and Reality [MoMA Exh. #794, March 23-June 19, 1966], one scrapbook containing public relations material produced by Wheeler prior to his work at MoMA, pages proofs of a manuscript, and 4 card file boxes of works of art and artists.

The records are open for research and contain few restricted materials.

The Monore Wheeler Papers are the physical property of The Museum of Modern Art. Literary rights, including copyright belong to the authors or their legal heirs and assigns. Rights to work produced during the normal course of Museum business resides with The Museum of Modern Art. The Monroe Wheeler Papers were accessioned into the Museum Archives from staff offices and institutional storage. See Accruals note below.

Processing and Condition Information

Processing of the collection was underwritten by a gift of the International Council in honor of Margaret McDermott and a grant from the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation.

Materials are generally in good condition. Some pages may have minor tears on edges. All materials have been rehoused in archival folders. News clippings and acidic printed material has been photocopied and discarded in some cases or isolated by acid-free paper or Mylar in others.


The Monroe Wheeler papers were not accessioned as an organic whole. In the early 1990s, the Museum Archives received an unspecified amount of records from the warehouse. In 1993, five more boxes came to the Archives from the Director's Office, and another box from the warehouse. Handwritten Inventory Control Sheets and a folder index document the re-housing and contents of all of the material. The folder titles were copied directly from the original file to the acid-free folders and have since remained the folder titles; some folders were never titled, and it is indicated where folder titles were created during the transfer. Two notebooks regarding the Turner exhibit, a scrapbook representing Wheeler's work before he arrived at MoMA, and the file card boxes were donated by Anatole Pohorilinko in 1994. In 1996, two more boxes of manuscript material were delivered to the Archives. Processing and rehousing of the entire collection as a unique body of material occurred in 2007.

Series I. General Correspondence

Series I contains business and personal communication between Monroe Wheeler and Museum staff, heads of cultural institutions, museums, government agencies, corporations, publishers, private collectors, artists and artist representatives. This series comprises in equal measure material regarding Monroe Wheeler's work with business clients outside of the Museum and with Museum programming departments and trustee committees. Arranged in alphabetical order, the files were organized into this series by their general subject-oriented content. Folder titles reflect correspondent, company name or the subject or content of the material. At times folders with similar subject matters have been collapsed, and original folder titles have been retained except where noted. Some folders have subject headings indicating the division of Wheeler's responsibilities: program departments, exhibitions, or publications. The type of materials found in this series include letters, draft documents, handwritten notes, pamphlets, brochures, reports and other supplemental material. Third party correspondence has not been removed.

Series III. Rights and Reproductions Correspondence

This series contains correspondence regarding permissions to reproduce or obtain reproduction rights to a works of art in the Museum collection. A significant portion of the correspondence contains discussions of the color reproduction process from the 1940s to the 1960s. Folders may be titled by the work of art being reproduced, by graphics or printing company, or by correspondent. The correspondents include printers, gallery owners, art dealers and representatives, private collectors, professors, publishing houses, publishers of journals, teachers, scholars and businesses. The files from the 1940s and 1950s contain the original letter and the typed reply. After 1959, Pearl L. Moeller, then Supervisor of Rights and Reproductions, replied to many of the reproduction requests, on which Monroe Wheeler was carbon copied. Other files contain samples, plates, brochures and material about the process of color reproduction.

Series V. Chronological Files 1960-1966

Series V contains a yellow carbon copy set of outgoing letters written or dictated by Monroe Wheeler. The content represents communication with artists, art collectors and dealers, heads of museums and cultural institutions, publishers, reproduction and printing companies, insurance companies, shipping companies, affiliates and other clients of the Museum. The files are arranged in chronological order by year divided into thirds. Single year files contain yellow carbon copies of request forms for complimentary copies of publications. [Note: Folders V.1-V.2 and V.21-V.23 are part of a blue carbon copy set and used to supplement material not found with the yellow copy set. For the year 1960, only the months May through December are present.]

Series VI. Committee Minutes, Binders and Budget Reports 1940-1960

Series VI contains committee binders and budget reports for exhibitions and the program departments at the Museum from 1950 to 1965. The material in this subseries was either previously bound or foldered in chronological order. Adherence to original grouping and chronological order has been maintained. All binder and folder titles have been preserved. The program departments include the Division Director, Exhibitions, Publications, Rights and Reproductions, Circulating Exhibitions, International Circulating Exhibitions (International Council), Library, Photography Lab, Public School Program, the Art Committee, and Gallery Talks. Budget Reports contain material for individual exhibitions. The Staff Program Committee Minutes can be found at the end of this series.

Series VII. Outside Affiliations and Post-Retirement

Series VII contains correspondence and other material resulting from Monroe Wheeler's affiliations outside of the Museum. This includes some material from his work as co-founder of the publisher Harrison of Paris Press, his work under Nelson A. Rockefeller in the U.S. Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs, and the 1969 Presidential Mission to Latin America with Nelson Rockefeller on which he served as a Cultural Advisor. This series also contains material pertaining to his work post-retirement as a Counselor to the Trustees.

Series VIII. Non-Manuscript Material

Series VIII contains five series of non-manuscript material. Series VIII.A contains invitations to MoMA and non-MoMA events collected by Monroe Wheeler. Series VIII.B contains photographs, index cards and two binders of research material gathered by Monroe Wheeler in preparation for the exhibition Turner: Imagination and Reality [MoMA Exh. #794, March 23-June 19, 1966] and for publication of a monograph on Turner. Series VIII.C contains a scrapbook containing advertisements and brochures from Wheeler's printing and advertising work prior to his tenure at the Museum. Series VIII.D has page proofs from an unpublished manuscript entitled "Anthology of Modern Art," of which the author is unknown. And Series VIII.E contains card files of artists or portrait artists and their subjects.

Subseries VIII.B. Exhibition Research Material

The exhibition research material gathered by Monroe Wheeler in preparation for the exhibition Turner: Imagination and Reality [MoMA Exh. #794, March 23-June 19, 1966] consists of two hardcover binders (11.5 x 10), index cards of Turner's works of art and black and white photographs of the Turner collection at the Tate Gallery in London.

A scrapbook containing advertisements collected, printed and written by Monroe Wheeler in the 1920s.

The scrapbook contains advertising brochures, magazine and newspaper clippings and adverts, inserts, invitations, and event programs produced or collected by Monroe Wheeler. These adverts were presumably written and printed on a freelance basis by Wheeler or as an employee of the companies. The companies include Central Manufacturing District Bank, Coal and Iron National Bank, and A.B. Dick Company, makers of the Mimeograph printing machine. Also includes letters to Monroe Wheeler and three cut-out articles written by Wheeler for a company newsletter.
