About the Hub

  • Envelope of glossy, white, hard Gevaert Ortho-Brom bromide paper. Manufactured by Gevaert, Ltd., in Antwerp. 10 sheets, 13 x 18 cm (5 x 7"). Collection Alison Rossiter

Gevaert (now based in Mortsel and known as Agfa-Gevaert) was started around 1890 by Lieven Gevaert in his family’s hometown of Antwerp, Belgium. Calcium paper was his first major success, and Gevaert et Cie, established in 1894, went on to produce some of the most superior and sought-after photographic papers, its core products, eventually selling them worldwide. The Gevaert factories emerged from both world wars relatively unscathed, and thus the company maintained a position of prominence, providing raw materials, such as paper pulp, to many neighboring countries.
