Review/Midtown Galleries; Four Blocks on 57th Street, a Treasure House of Modern Art
LEAD: There may be more Old Masters uptown and more contemporary art downtown, but the galleries along 57th Street continue to provide as comprehensive a view of 20th-century art as can be found almost anywhere in the world. One need only traverse the four blocks between Seventh Avenue and Park Avenue to realize that this remains the case.
