THE UNFLAGGING ARTISTRY OF JASPER JOHNS

By Deborah Solomon

LEAD: IN 1959, WHEN JASPER JOHNS was 29 years old, a photograph appeared in Time magazine that shows him standing beside one of his paintings. He was, after all, ''the brand-new darling of the art world's bright, brittle avant-garde,'' as the accompanying article explained.
