CENTURY OF CHAIRS SHOWN AT MUSEUM; 13 Examples of Evolution of Thonet Designs Included in Modern Art Exhibit

By Betty PEPIS

The gradual evolution of the modern chair over the last century is traced in a small but interesting exhibition opening today to the public at the Museum of Modern Art. Devoted to the production of one company, Thonet Brothers, Inc., a pioneer in chair designs, the display includes thirteen chairs designed and made between 1836 and 1952, and much supplemental photographic material showing these chairs and other Thornet furnishings in use.
