LEAD: WHEN the Museum of Modern Art opened its exhibition of Mario Botta's architecture last November, the Swiss architect's first work in the United States was being completed in Long Island City, Queens. People who saw his monumental brick houses and schools displayed in the show could simply take the subway to the International Design Center, New York and see firsthand the surprising furniture showroom he designed for International Contract Furnishings.
