Alfred worked at MoMA from about 1929 to 1968 as Curator, Arranger, Installer and Competition Judge , and he was head of The Museum of Modern Art from 1929–1943 , head of the Department of Painting and Sculpture from 1929–1940 , head of the Department of Painting and Sculpture from 1940–1943 and head of the Department of Painting and Sculpture from 1947–1967 .
