The Partido Comunista de México (PCM; Communist Party of Mexico), founded in 1918, elicited considerable adherence from Mexico’s artistic community in the 1920s, a period when party membership as a whole was modest. The PCM adopted the newspaper El Machete, headed by Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and Xavier Guerrero as its official organ in 1925. The party was banned by the Mexican government from 1929 to 1935.
