Posters being painted in Beijing’s Tachala Market for a huge demonstration taking place later in the day. To protest the British-American landings in Jordan and Lebanon, Beijing’s Fine Arts Institute mobilized professors and students to produce propaganda posters. (King Faisal is represented as a dog.) They work in assembly line: one artist makes copies of newspaper cartoons, another dabs in samples of the correct colors, and the others paint in the colors. The result is an average of one 6-by-9-foot (almost 2-by-3-meter) poster per person, a total of one hundred posters distributed in a matter of hours in Beijing’s main streets. Art is considered an “arm of combat.”
