Beijing is undergoing a gradual face lift, replacing the old one-story fluted-roof houses with four- and five-story buildings. Wide streets lined with trees are replacing the crowded narrow alleys of yesterday. The renovation of this street is being rushed in time for the October 1 celebrations of the founding of the People’s Republic.
