| An X-ray of Pollock's 1947 canvas, Full Fathom Five, suggests the presence of an underlying, abstract figure, standing upright. The outlines of this already-existing figure seem to have determined the placement of the tacks, nails, key, and other materials that appear, in the finished painting, to be scattered randomly across the encrusted surface. Superimposing the X-ray and a photograph taken with visible light, it is possible to see how Pollock responded to and developed the underlying composition: in fact, the figure emerges with greater clarity in the combined image than it does in the X-ray alone. |
