Perception

perception detailLook at the bathtub: It takes a while before your eye is able to decipher what those odd shapes depict, before you're able to tell that one shape is the leg, and one is the top round edge of the bathtub. However you will never be sure what the striped shapes behind the tub are, or what the pink area in the lower right corner of the painting stands for (skirt of the washstand, bathrobe on a chair?), or whether the nude is stepping onto a carpet or into a washbasin. Bonnard leaves us pondering, intentionally disguising the mundane or hiding the obvious.
