Light
The light blue, pink, yellow, and white ceramic tiles in the upper lefthand corner of the painting indicate a wall that is bathed in light, while the tiles on the right side of the room, painted in darker, purplish hues, indicate a wall in shadow. The source of light is clearly identified by the triangular shadow cast beneath the Venetian blinds from which the light angles its way into the room. The room is essentially divided into light and shadow by means of tonal changes within the patterns on the wall and linoleum, and the skin of the nude. The harsher white of the bathtub serves as a bounce for diffusing the light across the surfaces of the room, thus softening the contrasts.
