Traveling to the Venice Biennale and Milan for the first time, I expected to find myself exposed to a variety of curatorial approaches and institutions in an international setting. From a massive global biennial to private museums and foundations, my destinations would offer a very different perspective, approach, and geography for exhibitions.

Learning as a Form of Art: Artists and Educators Overlooking the Sculpture Garden

I have found that artists are not often invited to share their teaching methods with the public, which is mysterious since many contemporary artists not only work in education, but also consider it part of their artistic practice. What is interesting to me is that, when it comes to art and education, the discussion is not about whether it’s art but what happens when education is the work itself.

Last Saturday’s Warm Up saw techno and dance music meet percussion with some of the most high-energy acts to hit the MoMA PS1 stage this summer. French Fries and Bambounou went b2b to start the day, bouncing different house and dance tracks off one another with their strong musical chemistry. Vessel’s live set of organic techno sounds then cast a darker atmosphere over the crowd.

Five for Friday: Time to Hit the Water

Five for Friday, written by a variety of MoMA staff members, is our attempt to spotlight some of the compelling, charming, and downright curious works in the Museum’s rich collection.

For many of us, the desire to escape on vacation reaches its apex every August. As heat permeates our daily landscapes and the slower pace of late summer drapes us in languor, we seek out calm country lakes, the majestic ocean, or perhaps a hidden swimming hole.

Serious techno vibes and unusual, intriguing rhythms filled last Saturday’s Warm Up. Rabit cast an air of darkness over the MoMA PS1 courtyard with beats typically reserved for late at night, making for an exciting daytime setting. The party continued with a nighttime feel while the sun shone bright over the crowd as they danced to a live set from Dorian Concept, followed by an infectious first ever performance from footwork producer Jlin, and a more upbeat DJ set from Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs.

Starry Night, Gory Night: Jaimie Warren’s House of Horror Sleeps Over at MoMA

Jaimie Warren is the creative force behind some of today’s most playful, beautiful, and viscerally beguiling video, performance, and photography projects. When Adam Parker Smith and I reached out to her last year to come in as a guest artist for our I Am a God: Artists, Obsession & the Cult of Celebrity Culture course, we immediately saw that she was the perfect collaborator and mentor for our community of young artists.
