Introduction

Cezanne and Pissarro’s dialogue about art was most fully articulated on the canvases they painted. Each had a unique syntax and vocabulary for the careful building of their paintings and arguments. While their subjects were often similar or even on occasion identical, their means for describing these scenes were quite different. The paintings selected for this study were subjected to close visual and technical examinations, bringing key differences forward and elaborating on the dynamic dialogue in which these two artists engaged over several decades.
