Bourgeois was a painter and printmaker early in her career but turned to sculpture in the late 1940s. (She would return to printmaking decades later.) Her first three-dimensional pieces were made of wood and often blended figural and architectural forms. She called them "personages" and said they recalled friends and family she had left behind in France.
