Tatyana Grosman urged Newman to try etching, and she and one of ULAE's master printers brought several plates and some tools to the artist's home to demonstrate the medium. The result was the series Notes, which reveals Newman trying a variety of marks—crosshatching, circles, dashes—in works that resemble his earlier drawings.
