Tina Modotti. Worker's Hands. 1927

Tina Modotti Worker's Hands 1927

  • MoMA, Floor 5, 510 The David Geffen Wing

Part of a vibrant scene of scholars, artists, and political activists in Mexico City in the 1920s, Modotti circulated her photographs internationally in leftist magazines and newspapers. Having joined the Communist Party in 1927, the artist expressed her political commitments in representations that speak to the injustices of inequality and the potential of working-class power through organizing. But she also produced more poetic, contemplative images of objects that embodied intellectual and creative labor.

How we identified these works

In 2018–19, MoMA collaborated with Google Arts & Culture Lab on a project using machine learning to identify artworks in installation photos. That project has concluded, and works are now being identified by MoMA staff.
