Unidentified photographer Construction of the Triborough Bridge, N.Y. 1936

  • Not on view

The bridge pictured here still exists today! It connects the New York City boroughs of Manhattan, Queens, and the Bronx. It changed the city’s appearance, adding another big structure to our skyline. This photo was taken the same year the bridge opened to traffic. In 2008 the bridge was renamed the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge—but many New Yorkers still call it the Triborough Bridge.

Think about why the photographer might have wanted to document this construction project. Notice what is happening in this photo. What are people doing?
