In this tightly packed composition, two hooded figures emerge from an indeterminate space: one has a bowed head, while the other's hands are raised above his or her face, in a posture of sorrow or horror. Pollock's sinuous, rhythmically interlocking figures bear the influence of the Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco, whose work he studied intensively during these years.
