Aurèlia Muñoz, Antoni Gaudí Study of a catenary arch for the Gaudí crypt at Colonia Güell 1996

  • Not on view

This model of a catenary arch system mimics one made by the famed Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí for the Cripta Gaudí at Colonia Güell, a textile mill and organized living community outside Barcelona. Muñoz has inverted and drawn the operation of force lines that determine the structure of a dome using finely adjusted strings and loom weights. A product of her lifelong fascination with Gaudí, this model pays homage to Muñoz’s work in fiber, a monumental example of which is on view nearby.
