Connors took this photograph, among many others, over several trips to North Korea from 2013 to 2016. Throughout the world, North Korea is known as a reclusive nation that strictly limits its citizens’access to information. Connors’s images
of charged symbols, like this mask, combine a documentary style with a more metaphoric approach. Through such images, Connors explores the discrepancies between experience and state-controlled narratives and what it means to live with fundamentally different conceptions of reality.
