Tauba Auerbach. Untitled. 2012

Tauba Auerbach Untitled 2012

  • Not on view

Auerbach’s works establish objective systems, such as mathematical structures and repetitive actions, in order to test the limits of individual perception. Produced more recently than others in the gallery, this work explores process and material in ways similar to the other artists highlighted here. It is part of a series of paintings Auerbach (who uses they/them pronouns) began in 2009, in which they folded canvases into geometric shapes, then sprayed acrylic paint across the folded creases. Next, the artist stretched the canvases flat so that the dimensional folds became lines in a gradient of color, staging uncanny illusions of light and shadow across the works’ surfaces.
