Max Ernst Variant of plate (page 115) from Monsieur Aa l'antiphilosophe: Volume I from L'Antitête 1947–49, published 1949

  • Not on view

This etching was inserted into the volume of the same title as a supplementary suite to the deluxe edition of the book. It was printed from the same etching plate Ernst had created for the book’s illustrations; however, the background colors were omitted, and watercolor was added by hand, enhancing the playfulness of Ernst’s free-flowing, phantasmagorical forms.

Gallery label from Max Ernst: Beyond Painting, September 23, 2017-January 1, 2018.
