In 2000, the Cannes International Film Festival established Cinéfondation, a not-for-profit organization that promotes the work of student filmmakers in postgraduate programs. In 2004, an international jury handed out four awards to filmmakers from the United States (Frederikke Aspock, First Prize), Finland (Marja Mikkonen, Second Prize, shared), Romania (Corneliu Porumboiu, Second Prize, shared) and Poland (Jan Komasa, Third Prize).
