Eleven years ago the Cannes International Film Festival established Cinéfondation, a nonprofit organization that promotes the work of student filmmakers. In 2009, an international jury headed by John Boorman (Great Britain) and including Bertrand Bonello (France), Ferid Boughedir (Tunisia), Leonor Silveira (Portugal), and Ziyi Zhang (China) handed out the Cinéfondation competition awards to filmmakers from schools in the Czech Republic, China, South Korea, and Israel.
