Projects 43: In Memory of…

November 23–December 12, 1993 The Museum of Modern Art

For Projects 43: In Memory of… The Museum of Modern Art’s community of staff, trustees, and artists was asked to join in a collective act of memory and remembrance by listing on a card the names of people who have been lost to the AIDS epidemic. Projects 43: In Memory of… is a commemorative exhibition consisting of a memorial wall comprised of the cards that were returned. Blank cards are also available for Museum visitors, so they can add their own list of names to the display. Although the cards will multiply over the course of the exhibition, they represent only a fraction of the daily toll that AIDS exacts from our community. While simple gestures such as listing names cannot save lives, they speak to our collective loss, diminish our estrangement, and reaffirm our refusal to allow our memories to die.
