Minari. 2020. USA. Written and directed by Lee Isaac Chung. With Steven Yuen, Yeri Han, Yuh-Jung Youn. In English, Korean; English subtitles. 115 min.
Jacob (Steven Yeun) dreams of having his own farm to introduce a prosperous bounty of Korean vegetables to American kitchens. When a plot of land and a mobile home in the Ozarks become available, Jacob promises his wife, Monica (Yeri Han) and their two children (Alan Kim, Noel Cho) that a move from San Francisco is worth it. The family’s adjustment to their new life is upended by the sudden arrival of Monica’s mother, the eccentric grandma Soonja (Yuh-Jung Youn). Anchored by stellar performances and Lee Isaac Chung’s soulful direction, Minari —winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival—is a rare gem, a cinematic ode to family, faith, and the American dream.
