The Mother. 2003. Great Britain. Directed by Roger Michell. 35mm. 112 min.
Daniel Craig plays Darren, a charming yet loutish (and married) carpenter who has simultaneous affairs with Paula, a client, and her recently widowed mother, May. Anne Reid is admirably vulnerable as May, a woman who knowingly risks relationships with her children to pursue Darren. Craig brings a unique mixture of arrogance and sensitivity to the film. John Waters named the film one of the 10 best of 2004.
