Jojo Rabbit. 2019. USA. Directed and written by Taika Waititi. With Roman Griffin Davis, Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell
How much should children know about the evils of the world? Can humor fight fascism? Where you fall on those questions will set the stage for your appreciation of Taika Waititi’s raucous self-proclaimed “anti-hate satire.” A timid young German boy (Roman Griffin Davis), a Nazi Youth in the final months of the regime and its genocidal atrocities, is trying to be loyal fanatic. For encouragement, he turns to an imaginary friend, who takes the form of Adolph Hitler (played by the Polyensian/Jewish Waititi himself). As the true evils of anti-Semitism are slowly revealed to him through the tough-love guidance of two women—his indefatigable mother (Scarlett Johanssen) and an unexpected new friend (Thomasin McKensie)—he begins to see his world as it truly is.
