Un Film dramatique. 2019. France. Directed by Éric Baudelaire. French with English subtitles. 114 min.
The kids are alright in this hybrid documentary that recently garnered the Prix Marcel Duchamp, making Eric Baudelaire only the second filmmaker to receive France’s top award. In his latest collaborative project, Baudelaire tasked a group of middle schoolers from a Paris banlieue to film their lives over the course of four years. The resulting home movies and classroom debates around ethnicity, identity, and filmmaking make up a candid, profound, often humorous collective portrait that speaks to the power of self-representation – during the budding filmmakers’ formative years and fraught social tides in Europe and beyond.
