This maximalist, highly imaginative film, the newest collaboration between artist-filmmakers Daniel Schmidt and Gabriel Abrantes, turns the unravelling of a hunky if facile soccer star into a politically minded lampoon of contemporary Europe. Having precipitously fallen from stardom after a missed championship goal, Diamantino unwittingly finds himself at the center of a scheme involving genetic cloning, far-right propaganda, and the refugee crisis. Equally implausible and profound, this is probably the only film to premiere in Cannes’ Critics Week sidebar to feature giant puppies atop pink clouds, and to be described in the New York Times as “an early Adam Sandler comedy remixed by Pier Paolo Pasolini.” Courtesy Kino Lorber.
