Director Mary Harron and writer Guinevere Turner reteam for a thematic extension of their American Psycho (2000), this time focusing on the three women—Leslie Van Houten (Hannah Murray), Patricia Krenwinkel (Sosie Bacon), and Susan Atkins (Marianne Rendón)—who committed murder at the behest of Charles Manson (Matt Smith). Told in flashback, as a graduate student (Merritt Wever) tries to understand these three emotionally vulnerable, oddly childlike women held in isolation in a California prison, Charlie Says investigates the psychology of shared delusion and the fragility of moral conviction, suggesting that the fault lies not in charismatic psychopaths but in ourselves.
