Once Upon a Time in...Hollywood. 2019. USA. Directed and written by Quentin Tarantino. With Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie. 161 min.
Washed-up TV star Rick Dalton, hobbled by poor career choices and a taste for whiskey sours, faces irrelevance at the dawn of the New Hollywood, and his enigmatic friend/driver/stuntman Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) is along for the ride. The Manson Family, Bruce Lee, and a host of other well known (and not so well known) film and television personalities make appearances in Quentin Tarantino’s affectionate ode to the Los Angeles of his youth. Margot Robbie plays an angelic Sharon Tate, who glides in and out of the story at key points, but Tarantino is primarily interested, and invested, in the friendship between Dalton and Booth. The hang time between the two men is the heart of the film, and DiCaprio and Pitt’s easy way with Tarantino’s dialogue and references makes them a truly memorable onscreen duo. Courtesy Sony Pictures.
