Harmony Korine’s latest film is a hedonistic romp trailing Moondog (Matthew McConaughey), the resident carefree, stoned poet of the Florida Keys. Moondog’s days blur easily into one another as he freely sleeps with multiple women and composes poetry on his typewriter while sailing out to sea, all with a Pabst Blue Ribbon tallboy in one hand and a joint in the other. Following an unexpected interruption of his habit-sustaining cash flow and pressure from his agent (Jonah Hill), Moondog must finally compose the next great American novel his peers have long expected from him. A vibrant, frenetic tale about pursuing the simplest pleasures of life, *The Beach Bum*’s moral compass at times may appear to be broken, but Moondog remains the film’s absurd yet enlightened heart of gold.
