Designing Woman. 1957. USA. Directed by Vincente Minnelli. Screenplay by George Wells. With Lauren Bacall, Gregory Peck, Dolores Gray. 35mm. 118 min.

Marilla and Mike fall in love but no one, including them, can understand why. Marilla is a chic, sophisticated fashion designer. Mike is a sportswriter who doesn’t care one iota about fashion, culture, or the haughty poseurs who seem to flock to Marilla. Sparks fly when Marilla is tapped to create costumes for a new Broadway production and the big star turns out to be Mike’s former flame. Look for an onscreen performance by the legendary choreographer Jack Cole—Cole and Minnelli make magic in a glorious backstage number.
