Young Man with a Horn. 1950. USA. Directed by Michael Curtiz. Screenplay by Carl Foreman, Edmund H. North, based on the novel by Dorothy Baker. With Lauren Bacall, Kirk Douglas, Doris Day. 35mm. 112 min.
Rick Martin is a talented young trumpeter who enjoys great success in the music industry—and with his female fans. Rick’s love affairs with the sweet band singer Jo North and the volatile Amy North are both rocky, but he prefers his trumpet to any red-blooded woman anyway. Based on the tragic life of musician Bix Beiderbecke, Young Man with a Horn is filled with performances by jazz greats like Hoagy Carmichael, Willie “Smoke” Willoughby, and Juano Hernandez. As the unstable Amy, Lauren Bacall gives a performance of real nuance, as a woman with what seems like an undiagnosed bipolar disorder.
