Blackboard Jungle. 1955. USA. Written and directed by Richard Brooks. Based on the novel by Evan Hunter. With Sidney Poitier, Glenn Ford, Anne Francis. Added to the National Film Registry in 2016. 35mm. 101 min.

Described as “sensational and controversial” by New York Times critic Bosley Crowther, Blackboard Jungle follows Rick Dadier, a new teacher in a large, overcrowded inner-city vocational high school where tensions flare and teachers pray to make it to the 3:00 bell. The idealistic Dadier believes he can instill order in his class by being demanding, but the students’ will proves stronger than his own. When violence rings out, a surprising ally steps forward to assist Dadier.
