In 1915, Major Brand, commander of the 59th British air squadron in France, experiences guilt over the recent losses of his airmen. Are Allied planes really inferior to German air power? Brand is relieved of his duties and ace flyer Dick Courtney is promoted, but when Courtney turns to the bottle to deal with the pressure, alcohol starts to cloud his judgment.
