Vinterbrødre (Winter Brothers). 2017. Denmark/Iceland. Directed by Hlynur Pálmason. In Danish; English subtitles. 100 min.
Emil (Elliott Crosset Hove), a lonely, eccentric young man, lives and works in a desolate Danish limestone mining community with his much more sociable brother. Few notice Emil until he is suspected of causing a coworker’s grave illness, which leads to his further isolation. A landscape covered in indistinguishable white ash and snow masks the darkness that comes to envelop him. Shot on 16mm film, this debut feature by Icelandic visual artist/filmmaker Hlynur Pálmason is a daring, immersive sensory experience. The story, emotional tone, color temperature, dialogue, body language, landscape, and soundscape share equal prominence in creating a unique experience of total cinema.
