Rabid. 1977. Canada. Directed by David Cronenberg. 91 min.
The irreverent copy for Gore Gazette’s screening of the film at Club 57 announced “cataclysmic venereal horror…the entire city of Montreal infected by rabid nymphos.” With porn star Marilyn Chambers in the lead, Canadian director David Cronenberg’s Rabid contributed significantly to his growing reputation as the master of sci-fi body horror, and gave his work added relevance for downtown moviegoers into the antisocial effects of bod-mod and gender role-playing. In this gruesome feature, “morphogenetic” medical practices on an unconscious accident victim have epidemic consequences that result in civil unrest.
