El. 1953. Mexico. Directed by Luis Buñuel. Based on the novel by Mercedes Pinto. With Arturo de Córdova, Delia Garcés, Carlos Martinez Baena. 35mm. 82 min.
In the spring of 1980, Bikini Girl zine editor and practicing dominatrix Lisa Baumgardner screened this study of male sexual paranoia as part of a program titled Film Mania!, along with “slave films” and “s/m loops.” Bunuel’s surrealistic perspective turns what might have been a standard romantic melodrama of jealousy into a critique of love and religious faith. Its US release title, This Strange Passion, neatly sums up its charm for cynical Club 57 filmgoers set on exploring their fetishes and alternative identities.
