Modern and postmodern art provide a variety of strategies for honing our vision. Looking at art helps us see things more clearly while tuning us in to elements that go beyond the visual. We will investigate different strategies artists employ to encourage viewers to notice what could otherwise be overlooked in our oversaturated visual world. We will also consider ways artists identify or remind us what is absent or removed from our field of vision. Artists to be discussed include Louise Bourgeois, Max Ernst, Stephen Shore, and Bruce Nauman, among others.
