His Girl Friday. 1940. USA. Directed by Howard Hawks. Screenplay by Charles Lederer, based on the play The Front Page, by Ben Hecht, Charles MacArthur. 92 min.

With Cary Grant, Rosalind Russell, Ralph Bellamy, Porter Hall. After a quickie divorce in Reno, which kept her away from the newsroom of The Morning Post, ace reporter Hildy Johnson returns to tell her boss, Walter Burns, that she is quitting. Turns out Hildy divorced Walter (awkward!) and she’s leaving New York City for Albany to marry Bruce, a swell fellow who promises a quiet life. The machinations go into overdrive as Walter schemes to keep Hildy in his life—and on the story of the year.

This film accompanies Modern Matinees: Mr. Cary Grant.
