Tromeo & Juliet. 1996. USA. Directed by Lloyd Kaufman. Screenplay by Kaufman, James Gunn. With Jane Jensen, Will Keenan, Sean Gunn. 107 min.
Troma Entertainment is known for its naughty, rowdy spoofs of Hollywood genre films. In this Troma take on Shakespeare, director Lloyd Kaufman fashions an outrageous farce in which Tromeo Que and Juliet Capulet meet at a costume party. Neither is an innocent—Tromeo is an apparent porn addict and Juliet is a vigilante—but the bones of Romeo and Juliet are still here, albeit in a Troma soup of far more ferocious ingredients. Don’t expect iambic pentameter, but do expect an original, eccentric perspective on Shakespeare. Contains scenes of explicit nudity and graphic gore.
